Melissa White & Florence Price
Florence Price’s first masterwork folds together the textures of African-American hymns, spirituals and dances – weaving a symphony that is at times joyful, soaring, rhythmic and tranquil. This award-winning work was the first by an African-American woman to be performed by a major American orchestra, (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 1933). Be enchanted by this performance, featuring another award-winning artist, as Melissa White takes you to the heart of Price’s magnificent symphony. The evening also includes Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, commonly known as the “Italian.” The sparkling and fresh opening movement transforms into a dusky processional succeeded by a minuet, a tarantella and a raucous saltarello. A night to remember!
