Reel Talks: Mr. Holland's Opus with Reverend Dr. Wallace Mayton III and Abby Mayton Smith


MATRIX:MIDLAND enriches lives through the celebration of art, science and the humanities. Presenting fresh ideas that are both inspiring and thought provoking. In that spirit we are introducing Matrix Virtual Cinema Discussions. Discussions will occur every other week this summer. Be ready to dive right in at 7:30 pm. The event is free but registration is required.

Glenn Holland is a musician and composer who takes a teaching job to pay the rent while, in his 'spare time', he can strive to achieve his true goal - compose one memorable piece of music to leave his mark on the world. As Holland discovers 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans' and as the years unfold the joy of sharing his contagious passion for music with his students becomes his new definition of success.

Why did they select this film?  The choice of “Mr. Holland’s Opus”:  The movie serves as a reminder that success is not always determined by personal achievement.  The unseen and unacknowledged successes may be relationships.  Our Opus may be a “who” instead of a “what.”

  • This is NOT a Live Stream viewing of the film. The film can be found on one of these platforms: YouTube, Amazon Prime, or Google Play. Watch the film on your own time, at your pace.
  • Register for the discussion you would like to join. The event is free but registration is required. The registration deadline is 7 PM on the day of the discussion.
  • Connect with people from around the region and enjoy some Reel Talk!


Registration will close at 7 PM on Wednesday, July 1.  The Zoom link will be sent to the registrants by 7:15 PM that evening, for the discussion to begin promptly at 7:30 PM.
